If I am not mistaken, Perry twins released their first set of plastic figures (ACW infantry) around February 2008, almost a decade ago.

This was also the first set of historical 28 mm hard plastic multi-part figures released, and was soon followed by other manufacturers getting into plastic business.

Would anybody happen to remember more closely the date for the actual release?

It was definitely 2008 but I cannot remember the month. I have an Excel file of stuff I have bought with dates. That may help – I will have a look later.

Pretty sure that the "late" Wargames Factory was the first with 28mm plastics.

Pretty sure that the "late" Wargames Factory was the first with 28mm plastics.

Wargames Factory had quite some delays in getting their first kit out.

Digging old threads from 2008, it seems that Perrys got their ACW infantry out in March, Warlord had their Romans out around May and WF Romans were getting to people in October.

I remember the days before that, whenever somebody would come up with plastic wargaming figure, we'd laugh, we'd point out that only the five richest kings of Europe could afford to have plastic moulds made. We'd then stone the infidel and wallow in our ignorance like pigs in mud.

Ah good times !!!

I remember that not everyone thought such a thing impossible.

Many years ago I explored making figures in hard plastic. I had an acquaintance who owned injection molding machines for another business. We did a number of pricing scenarios and based on the sales of figures at that time we would have to sell twice as many figures as the largest producer of the day to just break even.

I have a look through my Excel list. I bought all of the early plastic sets.

I ordered my Perry ACW infantry on 2nd March 2008 and received them 16th April.

Warlord Romans were ordered 12th May 2008 and arrived 16th May. That is quite impressive as I live in Switzerland.

I ordered Wargames Factory Zulu War British on 31st March but they did not arrive until 6th October.

As for the plastic output that the Perrys have produced in the past ten years, by my counting they have currently released in 28 mm (including the recent Zulu set:

- 22 infantry sets
- 8 cavalry sets
- 1 artillery set
- 4 buildings

Besides these, there are two more infantry sets that consist of re-boxed sprues from other sets (Agincourt foot knights and ACW Union skirmish line), ACW Battle in a Box set (re-boxed sprues from earlier releases plus a new mounted general sprue) and the Travel Battle set of smaller figures.

Plus in near future we should be seeing one more set of Napoleonic cavalry – maybe a Salute release in mid-April.
