I was recently viewing the excellent Sash & Saber 25/28 range and noticed that ALL the Federal figures featured knapsacks, and that this phenomenon was by no means confined to S & S. In fact it appears to be an almost universal feature among the many manufactures of ACW figures, no matter the scale. I'm no expert on the matter but wasn't it common practice to drop packs before going into action so as to allow more freedom of movement when performing the various combat evolutions? If so, why have said manufacturers got it so wrong over the years? |

Don't you know that all Union miniatures must be sculpted with knapsack and forage cap, and all Confederate miniatures must be sculpted in hat and blanket roll? It must be an ironclad rule since practically all sculptors apparently comply with it. Exceptions are allowed. Seen many zouaves wearing a knapsack? |

I have often wondered about this myself. |

I don't have my sources noted, but I read recently that prior to the battle of Gettysburg, the Army of the Potomac issued an order that knapsacks not be dropped prior to going into battle as so very many were never recovered. How much that order was followed down the chain of command, I don't know. Tom |

As anyone who has ever served will tell you – do NOT get separated from your kit… ;-) |

Timecast- Didn't have that problem when I was in. 'Course, being in tanks solves that problem (hard to mislay a M60A1!) |

S&S makes "Union Western troops" and they don't have that many knapsacks. They look more campaign styled. |

As a reenactor. I found the knapsack uncomfortable. The blanket roll could carry as much and was far more comfortable. I could see a lot of Yankees just losing the knapsack when something on it broke. |

They needed backpacks to carry all the stolen loot. |
