There is a dearth of good generic fantasy humans. They are either highly themed to suit a particular game or are based on a historical example.

Oathmark just teased some very useful fantasy human warriors that can't easily be pegged down as being a particular style other than maybe "Generic later Dark Ages."

The only problem is that the greedy bastards with existing armies are all jumping on the bandwagon "Please, make them more like Late Romans, no make them Early Byzantines, make them Saxons !"

It's being in line in a shop, you found something you like and then a bunch of people jump the queue and start to make demands "Do you have it in blue ?", "I like it, but do you have it in completely different ?"

And when you point out that you want one as they come without alterations or factory rebuilds, they stare at you like you're some heretic because "How dare you steal yet another potential source of figures to toss on the pile anyway because they are never quite up to your standards to begin with."

If I want my Fantasy figures to look like Late Romans I'd get a box of Gripping Beast !!!

They're supposed to be fantasy figures to begin with, so they are bound to disappoint you even more than say the Gripping Beast plastics, but thanks to your selfish greed they are now completely verkackt, you won't buy them because they these fantasy figures are "NOT HISTORICAL ENOUGH !!!" And I'm stuck because I don't get suitable generic figures because the selfish greedy bastards want it their way !!!

Go fund your own figures ! Leave us something and don't assume the industry exists solely to provide figures to everyone called "YOU" !

Feel better now?

The Beast Rampant22 Jan 2018 8:16 a.m. PST

Yes, let it all out. grin

From what little I've seen, I like them. They are fantasy enough not to be just repurposed historicals, but not over-the-top. And, they look like grunts, like the Frostgrave hirelings. Too many "regular Joe" fantasy soldiers look better-equipped than most historical knights- which is, if not "wrong", is certainly tiresome.

No idea who he is having a rant about? The only fantasy boxed plastics that I'm aware of are GW, Fireforge, North Star, & Shieldwolf. Some are quasi-historical but what do you expect, all fantasy is rooted in reality.

Shouldn't this be on the drivel board?

My complaint? A dearth of good generic civilians.

I thought it was gonna be about the lack of chubby figures, in Fantasy wargames :/

While I don't like the language, I do, otherwise concur, I think.

Many modern fantasy armies and images are looking more historical.

Back in the eighties, think conan and death stalker. A medieval twist, yes, but definitely fantasy.

These days, who could tell between a chap from Vikings or Game of thrones?

Thats all tv and film, but I think the Lord of the rings movies have a bit to answer for here. They were definitely based on historical designs, rohan/vikings, english/hobbits for example. Perhaps that opened the doors? The figures from these films also, paving the way?

Perhaps the problem occurred with people using historical figures for fantasy back in the 70/80s? Then the theme stuck.

Then again. Every company wants their own range. They are not just going to do orcs and elves, but they also want humans of a couple of varieties.

Games like steam punk, now diesel, and other forms of historical sci fi add to it too.

At the end of the day, coming up with a unique race is just too hard for most and you can steal all you want from history with out ever seeing a lawyer.

I personally want my figures to look more "real" and not something that has fake weapons ( double bladed twirling chains) or cartoony armor.

I think the realism of the LOTR designs is one reason it succeeded. It helps immerse you into the world.

I don't play Warmachine, Dark Age, AOS for that reason.

That being said, I do agree with the OP in that Oathmark's stuff should fit its world and look unique, and not try to look like Romans or Saxons etc.

Winston Smith23 Jan 2018 10:01 a.m. PST

There's a reason Medieval people dressed the way they did. It was practical and efficient. Ditto weapons, armor and shields.
Are we going to deny our fantasy folk the right to dress and fight in a practical and efficient manner simply because they are fantasy?

Winston Smith23 Jan 2018 10:03 a.m. PST

I'm having a very hard time figuring what "greedy bastards" have to do with this.

Stealth100023 Jan 2018 10:44 a.m. PST

I feel your pain.

Zinkala23 Jan 2018 12:07 p.m. PST

Just in case anyone else is confused like I was the human The Beast Rampant showed is a test figure for Oathmark. Also in because it looks like some people don't realise it Oathmark minis are made by NorthStar.

Personally I like my fantasy minis to be "plausible". I'm not a fan of over the top surfboard sized weapons and things like that. So I'm loving the style Im seeing in Frostgrave and Oathmark minis. I use historical minis in my fantasy and don't mind seeing historical influences in my fantasy.

Garand23 Jan 2018 2:28 p.m. PST

Let me just say I also love what the Oathmark range is trying to do. I do not agree that fantasy figures are looking "too historical" these days. The biggest manufacturers of fantasy figures, like GW & Warmahordes are running from that aesthetic as fast as they can, and Reaper only has a handful of figures that are vaguely historical; the vast majority are solidly "fantasy" with some being OTT high fantasy. Personally this movement AWAY from plausable fantasy figures is what has been bugging me for a while, and a big reason why I have no interest in playing Warmahordes. I've jumped with both feet in on the Oathmark bandwagon, & really hope its successful. Looking forward to the Elf & Human pre-orders!

Damon.

Winston Smith….Exactly!

Crazyivanov24 Jan 2018 6:39 p.m. PST

Honestly I quite agree. While I like (and do) use nice historicals for Fantasy Armies having some new plastic fantasy alternatives that go into the "Generic Fantasy Kingdom" route is nice. I especially miss some of the 70's/80's trash fantasy aesthetic and hope for some of it to come back a little. Maybe mixed with the High Gothic style of Berserk for elites and characters.

The H Man24 Jan 2018 9:14 p.m. PST

Ummm…

Look up fantasy!

It's supposed to be fantastic, and not real. That is kind of the point. Plausible is not fantastic.

On the other hand I love sword and sorcery like conan and the like, as it is realistic, but still with a flair of fantastic. Yet even the reality is fake, where does the food come from, how could they walk for so long, things like that.

If you want reality, play historical games. Which are great, for that reason.

Also, winston smith, do you dress your fantasy figures in T-shirts and jeans, as they are both practical and realistic? What about air planes, far more practical than ox carts, and also realistic.

Winston Smith24 Jan 2018 10:15 p.m. PST

If I did fantasy hippies or zombies, yes I would.
Show me an aeroplane from 856AD.

We went over this a few years ago. "Fantasy" does not mean "unbelievable" or "implausible".

Guys in bearskin loincloth in 2' of snow are just plain dumb.

The Rohirrim should look like Ostrogoths. Carolingian is ok too.
If Peter Jackson wants to make the men of Gondor look like Late Byzantine or Italians, that's great.
If the Infantry of the Boltons or Lannisters look like Burgundians, Bravo! But lose those cheek pieces in the helmets. A helmet isn't supposed to trap a sword.

Bottom line. If you want your Infantry to look like Gene Simmons it GWAR, that's nice. I won't be buying those figures.
