Looking at them, they don't look very useful. A small swivel gun must be much more effective?

Long range with a large calibre ball.

Then at short range load up with "canister".

Better than a swivel gun!

A 17th/18th century superweapon, combining the virtues of a .50 caliber sniper rifle and a 10 gauge shotgun.

They were quite useful for picking out work parties, shooting through hoardings and gabions, damaging enemy guns or any other targets that could be taken out by a high-powered well aimed shot.

They were also quite effective against storming parties when positioned in bottlenecks where lots of men were lined up.
