I have recently painted up a large number of Westwind 28mm WW2 "Berlin or Bust" infantry, and am now in the market for vehicles (tanks, armored cars, etc.).

Which manufacturer would you recommend for these figures, which are on the larger size of 28mm? I just recently built some Warlord/Italiari Bolt Action vehicles, but was dissatisfied by the smaller scale of these plastic kits.

Did you try West Wind's line of vehicles?

Stay away from West Wind's own vehicles. They're 1/60 and were designed to go with WW's earlier line of miniatures that are on the smaller side of 28mm.

I use exclusively 1/48 vehicles (with a few 1/50 diecasts in the mix). 1/48 vehicles are not as varied as all the 1/56 available but you can still find most everything you need. Tamiya has the best range of plastic kits (their earlier kits have diecast bases with more heft) and Blitzkrieg Miniatures also has a range in resin for this scale (they offer both 1/48 and 1/56).

Another option is 1/50 pre-built and pre-painted diecasts from Corgi. These can be used "out of the box" or repainted if you want to give them a better paint job.

If you're looking for more "obscure" vehicles not available from above, let me know what type. I might still be able to point you in the right direction.

I second 28mm Fanatik. All the way. Your mileage may vary…

Yes, I have not heard great things about Westwind vehicles (but do have 2 on order). Thanks to both of you who mentioned Tamiya. I was just considering purchasing a few Tamiya modes when I posted this message!

Solido 1/50 diecast vehicles are identical in size to Tamiya's 1/48 that I have.

UM and ICM also make 1/48 kits (mostly WW2 Soviet lighter vehicles).

If you can find the older Bandai/Fuman/Frog kits that are 1/48. (You have to be careful as some are now charging collectors prices for these …)

SkyBow and AFV also make 1/48 vehicles.

HobbyBoss makes some very nice kits that are inexpensive (again mostly Soviet armour but also KV-1 and KV-2 in German markings and upgrades (ie new cupola, guns, etc – all historical). The T-34s even have full interiors, if you like modelling.

Bronco also makes some Canadian/British armoured cars.

Italeri makes a fuel truck and an Italian armoured car in 1/48.

Airfix makes some British vehicles.

There is also New Millenium Diecast (again, be careful of collector's prices by some sellers).

The Tamiya kits go together very well!

For some of the rarer vehicles in 1/48 there is also Quaterkit.

However some of their stuff is eye wateringly expensive, but if you have deep pockets the ready made, painted stuff looks great.
