With the next in this series of historical novels due out this May, entitled 'The Encircling Sea' I thought it might be interesting to share my thoughts on the first book, Vindolanda by 'Dr Roman Army' himself, Adrian Goldsworthy.

I agree a good read, the only jarring note for me was the love interest in the tale… |

I'm reading it now and enjoying it. The little details bring the story and the characters to life. |

Agreed, a good read but for the seemingly mandatory romance. I look forward to the next one. |

Thanks for your comments chaps. I can't say I found the 'love interest' aspect at all distracting and it is difficult to thing of books in similar historical genre's that don't have it, from Bernard Cornwell, Anthony Riches, Alexander Kent et al. It can't do the film/TV rights chances any harm and probably would do if it was left out and presented as a pre-pubescent boys action read. Cheers JJ |

It was a great read and I highly recommend it for the battle descriptions. The love interest, whatever, it was part of his character development. The thing that actually grated a bit was the dammed english love of a murder mystery ala Taggart/Morse/Wallander/….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….all neatly tied up with a pint at an Oxford pub, the Isis or Vicy Arms perhaps…or Morse's one that Clinton didn't inhale in! Will be reading the next one regardless….. |
