I'm prepping to get back into DNd and fantasy wargaming and while I have plenty of orcs and ogres for use as generic fantasy bad guys, I seem to have misplaced my undead! GW figures are out as I am starting to use more and more historicals and the game is set in a dark ages milieu. Do mantic's undead matchup well with LOTR/Gripping Beast/Perry?Conquest plastics? I want the best bang for my buck, and need figures that are light and won't chip, hence my desire for plastic. I noticed the Mantic skeletons have cloth and armor…would they look ok on a dark ages table with predominantly chain armored humans etc? Thanks! |

Perfectly, as far as I'm concerned. They are true 28mm and not heroically scaled so the hands and heads aren't the size of bowling balls. |

Personally, for D&D use, the Reaper Bones undead tends to work rather well for a lot of the more generic ones. There are also the excellent Nolozur's/Deep Cuts minis by WizKids (The lines are essentially the same thing barring a few shifts between them such as the goblins where they are differently styled with Nolozur's being the more standard D&D official ones while Deep Cuts is the design from pathfinder). With the WizKids ones, there are some really great looking painting guides on YouTube that pretty much just use the Army Painter wash set with a few additional things added to it such as metallics |

You could go for historical figures, in true 25mm sizes: less money, greater variety. For Undead, look at Caesar's plastic figures, 1/72 scale, which is true 25mm. Caesar has some great figure, plastic, and delivered to your home for around $16 USD/set of 35 figures. Here is a link, with photo's, and a scale. Cheers! |

Reaper and Mantic are both solid low cost choices, but of a very good quality. |

Mantic skeletons armour is more medieval plate , sallet and heater shields than dark ages. They nice miniatures but they'd have more modern armour than everyone else. War games factory did naked skeletons but while they are nice by all accounts they are a pig to put together and probably hard to find now. |

Mantic Skeletons have a sort of mishmash late medieval flair to them, but the Ghouls and Zombies should work absolutely fine setting agnostic. Reaper Bones Skeletons are good too. Certain Wiz Kids D&D Undead are nice, like the Fireball Skeleton, and with proper stripping and repainting any number of Solomon Grundy Heroclix can act as Zombie Ogres. |

The Mantic Ghouls are very good. THey have an "I am Legend" look to them. |

Skull and Crown have skeletons based on Renaissance painting: link He has a small variety with more coming soon. |

I have gone to Mantic in place of GW & Reaper models. The torn tabards & ragtag bits of armor give them so much more character. |

I really fancy these skeletal Romans: link They might be especially appropriate for the time period you mentioned. They are UK, though, so I don't know if that helps. |

I would go with these: Mantic Undead
Undead Wights
Cool Mini or Not Undead Archers
They are call Deadeyes and are from CMoN's Zombicide Black Plague game. |

Last time I checked GW still sell the late 90s skeleton sprue. Not sure if they still do. |
