I have told my son that I would play 40K with him and we have a copy of the 6th edition 40K rules. Having old rulesets is fine as we will play games with friends and family.I play Fantasy Battle using either the 2nd edition or 6th edition rules…..as these are the ones I like. So being current doesn't bother me. I have very little experience of 40K and the way GW released codexes is confusing. One of the armies we are looking at is Dark Elder but there doesn't appear to be a 6th ed codex. Does this mean we would use the 5th ed codex for them even though we are using 6th ed rules?

Thoroughly recommend grabbing a copy of the new 8th Edition – released in June last year. Waaaaayyy superior to 6th Edition, easier to learn, plays faster, much easier to use vehicles, flyers, walkers, characters, etc, etc. Smoother for infantry, just all round better set.

My 13 year old son much prefers it too.

3rd edition through to 6th edition 40k you could get away with using pretty much any codex books the general lay out and organisation of armies didn't really change and minor differences to the rules didn't have much effect on the codex books. It was common practise to carry in using older edition codex books until a new one was released. You could use either version (3rd or 5th) of the Dark Eldar codex without really breaking the rules.

There was a long delay on releasing the Dark Eldar codex. It was a neglected army. I'm not sure of the time frame of the codex releases but you may need to get a 4th or 5th ed codex.

8th edition is easy fun--and free! You can download the rules from the GW website.

Many thanks for the replies

Dark Eldar didn't have a 6th ed codex release so you'll just have to use the 5th ed one (like all the DE players had to at the time. ). Unlike 8th ed, 3-7th eds were more or less just the same system with tweaks (they all used the same AP system – 8th went back to save modifiers).

Both options are good. I'd keep to older editions since it's just you and your family. No need to get caught up in the rat race.
As for which codex- my locals have mixed different editions of codices without a hitch.
