"In Transylvania, this prevalence of ethnocentrism syndrome focusing oncollective suffering and self-pity, and the tendency towards self-victimization on part of Romanians and Hungarians alike (as the above mentioned study identifies), is not an unknown or a surprising phenomenon. There is an important and complex network of causes that can explain such attitudes, and these causes are connected with the social, political, and cultural history of a province that has been sheltering these neighbouring nations and cultures for centuries. We shall not try to offer an indepth analysis of this network of reasons, yet we attempt to approach one of the most important factors that have shaped the communication between Romanians and Hungarians from Transylvania, namely the regional ideology called Transylvanianism, following its evolution in the first part of the 20th century…."
