Wire brushing a dowel to make bark texture is brilliant. I'm totally going to steal that idea.

Some thoughts on the toppling problem:
My trees on washers also topple constantly during games, and my tallest trees are only about 4" tall. I tried a few solutions (heavier washers, wider washers, stacks of washers…), but my current favorite solution is to base multiple trees on a larger base. I've settled on 3 trees glued to a rounded-triangle plastic base, but any number would work. This turns out to also speed setup and improve play, since trees are placed and moved aside (during the game) in small groups rather than one at a time.

With trees as tall as yours, I might take this a step further, and install the base with tubes or magnets to plug tree trunks into. That way the tall trees can be lifted out of the way while the troops move through and replaced after they leave, leaving behind a marker to show where the tree is for purpose of tracing LOS and LOF. Being able to break down the bases into a flat piece and several long pieces would also assist storage.

Thanks for your comments.

Rallynow – the Russians are Battlefront / Flames of war with some headswaps with Peter Pig. The Finns similar but with some older ranges mixed in. Yellow Admiral – I liked the wire brushing too, make sure you use Balsa wood though, otherwise it may be hard work ;). Thanks for the "toppling" thoughts I will let you know how I get on.

All the best
