Very good guide from Baccus, explains the uncertainties and problems with especially infantry flags in the ECW. At the BCW Regimental wiki we were fortunate to be given permission to host the old Military Modelling series of ECW flags, see here PDF link The Baccus articles rely on the excellent booklet by Peachy and Prince and benefit from more recent research than the old Mil Mod articles, but I've added some notes in to them to clarify, let me know if you spot anything else! |

This is in fact an old page and a newer and prettier version is now available, along with lots of other basic uniform and painting guides here link |

Interesting that the gyronny style (eg Gerard's, Duke of York's) appears to have been used only by the Royalists. Anyone know why? |

It was an older more traditional style so perhaps the Parliament thought it too representative of the old order that they were fighting against. However, I think it more likely that it was used by some parliamentary forces but was never recorded. The flags that are known are relatively limited and it's probably fair to write that most, perhaps contrary to popular belief, actually aren't known. |

Definitely fair to say that most flags aren't known, in fact only a very small number of flags are recorded for foot and in many cases it's impossible or at least ambiguous as to who they belonged to! |

I still get emails asking me to provide the coats and Colours for Hopton's western army. 'We don't know' is rarely deemed an adequate response… |

There's an excellent German book Flags and Standards which covers the ECW. Combines all current books in one volume. Full colour. Caliver have it. There is an English language title which does similar but is £85.00 GBP |
