Does anyone play Bolt Action in 15mm?

I have been drawn to the game by YouTube but I really don't want to upscale to 28mm as I already have a lot of 15mm terrain.

Thoughts?

It should work fine in 15mm.

David Manley29 Dec 2017 10:48 a.m. PST

Yes, it works fine. IMHO it actually looks better in 15mm

Onomarchos29 Dec 2017 11:19 a.m. PST

I agree with David. 15/18mm works well and looks better. My only issue is that most of my 1:100 scale stuff is based for FOW.

I play Bolt Action in 15mm all of the time -- especially Tank Wars.

15mm should work just fine…actually the ranges are even more realistic.
I play in 20mm.

I've tried it too. Works fine with no modifications IMO. Play it straight out of the book. Grab the order dice though. They are very helpful in this game.

You can even play with Fow base
12 men: 3 bases of 4
8 men: 2 bases
4 men: 1 base

anything in between make a tick on your roster sheet. It is not 28mm and you lose in "accuracy" but overall it doesn't really matter.

Nope. Can't do it. Upgrade to 28mm and you'll be a lot happier :)

GReg BRad30 Dec 2017 12:10 a.m. PST

Just do it in 15mm. Bolt Action uses this marketing trick to get their 28mm range sold. I play in 20mm too works fine.

bruntonboy30 Dec 2017 2:52 a.m. PST

We've played in 15/20/28mm and found the game play better the smaller the scale- ranges look better and it "feels" better. One caveat though…. it is tempting to play with bigger forces as they fit on the table, are cheaper to buy or you may have lots of stuff in cupboards. The one major fault we found was we tended to put too much on when using the smaller scales and the game bogs down a little so maybe bear that in mind.

Big advantage is you won't have to store huge 28mm terrain.

PrivateSnafu30 Dec 2017 6:45 a.m. PST

15 is fiddly. I play in 15. 20 would be better. I was in the same place lots of 15 terrain.

In 15mm how do you see what weapon the infantry figures are carrying? With my old eyes I can't see the difference between an MP-40 & a Strumgerwher.

14th…'how do you see what weapon the infantry figures are carrying?'

Mark the base. I number all my troops and also color code the designation (number).

Pistol -yellow
Rifle – white
SMG – red
AR – green
Auto Rifle – blue

LMG – white
MMG – red
HMG – green

ATR – white
PIAT / Bak / PzShrk – orange
PF – ‘dot' next to number (symbol)

Light Mtr – white
Med Mtr – red
Hvy Mtr – green

Special wpns – symbols…square, diamond, triangle, etc.

Sheckk – excellent, might have to try that.

I play BA regularly in 15mm. My figures are multi figure based, so I use plastic 'rings of death' when the bases take casualties. However Whereas BA 1 used dice to establish HE hits BA 2 uses templates which seems to have a greater effect on such multi figure bases :( So I still use dice to determine the effect here.

Warspite102 Jan 2018 3:22 p.m. PST

@ blank frank. I was also considering the Rings of Death – I used to play Johnny Reb!

Thank you for all replies.

@blank frank again:
I also note your comments about H.E. on modules as modules is probably the route I will go.
A quick check on the internet reveals the price of B.A. 1 has dropped since B.A. 2 came out. Second-hand copies are available for a reasonable price. I will investigate B.A. 1 first.

Bolt Action in 15mm works very well. You can collect large forces for less money, and the scale versus range issue is visually more appealing. I have assembled several different platoons of U.S., German and Soviet forces with plenty of armor and heavy weapon support, much of it from Ebay. The terrain is less expensive as well. I highly encourage your endeavor. Good luck!

Bolt Action works very well in 15mm with no changes. The scale seems more realistic then in 15mm.

quick question. For playing BA with either 15mm or in my case Airfix/Revell (~20-22mm), does one still have to base it on a 25mm circular base. I only ask because of issues like aiming points, artillery blast zones….i.e. if the LOS can touch the base you can see or shoot at the figure.

Thanks!
