I am in the process of painting a Sarissa MDF representation of Papelotte farm house. I have initially painted the roof with terracotta tiles but have seen other versions with the roof painted grey. I actually like the look of the grey tiles and am about to repaint them…. The initial research that I have completed seems to show terracotta to be correct for the period, although the farm, now has a slate roof. I would not usually be too concerned either way if the model was for my own wargames table but the model will form part of a centre piece for a small demo game at a public event. Even if I choose to use the 'wrong' colour scheme I would like to know the 'correct one'. Any help would be appreciated. |

An excellent book which contains engravings of Papelotte – a mix of grey and orange roofs. However one is entitles the ruins and shows grey roofing, so I would be tempted to go with that.. |

The best quality roof was grey slate. The compromise was red semi-round tiles, basically baked mud after all. The worst was thatched and it was used in Belgium in 1815. So you would find the grey slate on the domicile. Tiles on the outbuildings but even thatch on more exposed open structures. So like PoE says…mix and match. |
