I'm just starting. Should commanders always have two troopers with them? I assume its ablative armor.

Also, are snipers worth it?

Snipers are the perfect remedy to a commander's bodyguard as they choose the model killed. It all depends on your play style I suppose. Snipers can do their part but without hidden setup they lose much of their real terror.

Commanders are better off with just one assistant. 2 figures is a small target, getting a minus 1 to hit modifier. The third guy makes his 'unit' a regular size target. Sniper problem still applies, though.
