So I came over the word Värja when reading a swedish book. I knew it was a sword. But I was wondering just what kind.

The Swedish wiki for Värja is the English small sword.
But they don't match up. Particularly the the English article claiming the small sword was mostly a status weapon and used the in duels not hacking people to bits.

While the Russian with his brains spilled out on the snow at Fraustadt probably wouldn't agree the värja was just for show.

Swedes were bigger, so maybe their "smallswords" were bigger…

Have you found any pictures comparing the two types side by side?
