"What are the best medieval movies? Kings, sword fights, jousting, horses… fire, pillaging, knights, people with English accents saying "m'lady" and "ye"… This is a list of all the greatest medieval movies ever made, from movies about The Dark Ages to Renaissance films. Many of these may also be considered to be movies about knights. The best movies that take place in the Middle Ages are listed and can be sorted by categories. What films take place in medieval times? …"

Some of the people adding movies to that list apparently have no idea as to what 'medieval' means.

Gladiator at number 6???

Not sure why the Renaissance was included, but even worse are the later (Cromwell???) movies further down.

Pretty bad history even for the general public.

As far as the rest, seems to be a ranking based on how entertaining the voters found the movies rather than any historical values.

The Adventures of Robin Hood in 25th place?
Alexander Nevsky 40th?
Surely this is a joke!

And who told them that A Man for All Seasons, Cromwell, Man of La Mancha or Shakespeare in Love are Medieval movies?

Why do not we start a list of your recommendations now?….(smile)

Medieval could include from the fall of the Roman Empire (Early Medieval) upto the late 15th Century. Although I suspect most people would be looking at 11th/15th Century.
Seems to be a fair few fantasy or fairy tales in that list, Disney's "Snow White & the 7 Dwarves" while a good film could never be classed as medieval. As for the films listed after this period…god help us!

El Cid.

Warlord with Charlton Heston

Medieval period 5th to 15th century according to Wikipedia.

I like many of the movies on the list. There are also a few on the list which are real stinkers.

Why is Warlord never on tv? Great movie, but I haven't seen it since I was a kid.

One of the best medieval movies is supposed to be the Czech film "Marketa Lazarova" but I've never seen it.

I have "The War Lord" on Blu-ray and it is also one of my favourite medieval films together with "Excalibur"

Anything that describes Braveheart as historical HAS to be a joke.

For me I'd plug with 'the name of the rose' as a favourite, Monty Python and kingdom of heaven – both good as well. Most of the rest are not what I'd categorise as 'medieval' and they miss some excellent non-English films.

"Warlord" and "The Name of the Rose" are the most evocative for me. I always showed "Warlord" to my World History classes as it seemed to hit most of the points of medieval life and warfare.

I found the evil brother in "The Warlord" coming to the rescue with fireball shooting catapults to be most authentic.

The ONLY really good medieval movie is – of -course – the Holy Grail.

Some I've enjoyed in no particular order:

Sword of Lancelot
Prince Valient
Vikings
Henry V (Branaugh)
Henry V (Sir Lawrence)
Richard III
Excalibur
A Czech film on the Hussites made during Soviet domination so a bit left leaning but very good (not sure name)
Ivanhoe (original)
Warlord
Adventures of Robin Hood
Name of the Rose
A Norwegian film I caught on Netflix – can't remember name but had lots of medieval skiing

The Warlord with Charlton Heston sporting a very impressive Norman haircut! The Lion in Winter is another favourite of mine. Then it is Kingdom of Heaven, Excalibur, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and El Cid.

The Warlord is good. Artsy I know but I've always loved The Seventh Seal.

ocollens29 Mar 2018 7:44 a.m. PST

What about Knights of the Teutonic Order by Alexander Ford?

Despite the name which I have probably spelled wrong, he was a Polish director using Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel as a basis.

It is far from unbiased but has some spectacular battle scenes of Grunwald 1410.

Marcus Brutus31 Mar 2018 2:29 p.m. PST

Alexander Nevsky is probably not that well known in the general population. Probably the greatest Medieval movie of all time.
