Not really a civil war, more a breakdown of law and order, that could have became a civil war. Civil and police (supported by military) intervention from neighbouring states, in the form of the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) has generally been effective in restoring law and order and rebuilding government institutions. |

If you want a real civil war in that neighborhood, take a look at the war for independence on New Caledonia in the 1980s. OTOH, if you're looking for a fairy peculiar one, check out the "Coconut War" in which a bulldozer operator and his followers, armed mostly with bows and rocks, tried to declare Espiritu Santo's independence from Vanuatu, which itself had only been independent for a couple of weeks, prior to which it had been the New Hebrides. You won't see many insurrections being put down by the army of Papua New Guinea, called in by the new government of Vanuatu because they didn't have an army yet. LT |
