This is a brilliant find.

It is over 100 years old and may be packed with errors for all I know…but, at a glance, it is a superb account of the eagles as carried throughout the Napoleonic Era.

I first read it when I was in my first year at West Point (they have a world-class library) and years later bought a used copy of my own.

Well-worth having, errors or not.

I love any intro that starts with "when I was in my first year at West Point"…….

That carries respect from me, as one who never served and was thrown out of school cadets for wearing my (very, very, long) hair tied back in a ribbon. Swapping my blackened Rifles' beret badge, on a red felt base, for a simple Commandante's gold star did not help. It is a long story……

You ought to see the library. It is now in a new building. Years ago when I was doing Napoleonic research I was allowed in the special collection, which when you use it they actually lock you in the large cage it is in.

I was in a historians' paradise and when I thought it was time for lunch, I called out to be let out for lunch, and the librarian told me it was 5 o'clock, and I'd been there since 0900.

And I found some great material. This was in the days before laptops and personal computers, so I had taken voluminous notes which I still have.

A wonderful book as others have said. Added it to my library years ago and see it as inspiration for my brave (but often defeated) French!

"I'd been there since 0900."

What a great and inspiring tale………
