Friend? No.

Trust? To do what?

Stryderg18 Dec 2017 2:33 p.m. PST

A friend will help you move. A true friend will help you move a body. Or so I've been told.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP18 Dec 2017 2:35 p.m. PST

Bill, I don't even know for sure what your name is--only that you don't play "Paranoia" much.

This is what we call a commercial relationship. You remember Friendly Bob Adams from the loan company? He wasn't really your friend.

wrgmr118 Dec 2017 2:45 p.m. PST

No, only an online acquaintance.

rustymusket18 Dec 2017 3:27 p.m. PST

As the term " friend" is meant in the context you give, yes, you are my friend. Otherwise, I do not even really know you, as stated above.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP In the TMP Dawghouse18 Dec 2017 3:49 p.m. PST

Generally speaking I have to know someone pretty well before I consider them a "friend" per se … or trust them … Trust is earned not just given out of hand …

Only a few here on TMP would fit into those categories, for me, at least …

fantasque18 Dec 2017 3:59 p.m. PST

No seeing as you asked a direct question

TMP is a business, and it's usually best not to mix business and friendship. Here I'm just a paying customer.*

Anyway, a friend would understand my motives and my humor. So no.

To put that quote in context, note that more poll respondents said that TMP resembles the RPG Paranoia.

Friend or not … I'd be more than glad to talk with anyone here. At a convention, hobby shop, on the street, etc.
It's just being friendly and considerate. I'd think in person some may be less critical, argumentative, etc. … Or maybe not … ? evil grin

We never met, don't each other. It would an abuse of the word.
The Meaning of "friend" has been diluted by social media.
The same way, hero has been by media and politicians ( and the medals which used to go along- nowadays soldiers might have more than vets who did 39-50+++.

Earl of the North19 Dec 2017 9:32 a.m. PST

No, but then I don't consider most people I come into contact with through the the internet my friends.

Would I socialise with you, could we be friends if we knew each other in the real world…..I would hope so, I have never held any ill will towards you Bill so maybe in the vague sense of the internet, in it that we occasionally communicate and don't spend hours attacking each other we may be friends.

Seems to cheapen the word though, almost to the point of making it worthless as a description.

After wrongly DH'ing me twice for referring to "The Guardian's" legendary poor spelling (something that even the paper itself makes fun of from time to time) and wrongly a third time for supposedly "breaking the no-Nazis rule"; and then chuck in your anti-British attitude on top of that…

…what do you think?

Suggest you look up "Betteridge's Law".

But seriously, if someone is nursing a wound over having been in the TMP Dawghouse, get over it! It's not that big a deal. If you break the rules, you do the time. If the justice system is not perfect, that's a useful life lesson, no?

Cacique Caribe21 Dec 2017 9:23 p.m. PST

Well, I for one prefer the Dawghouse!

There it's a finite number of days, and at least it's clear to all what it is you did that put you there. And you don't have to worry about email delays or go through any kind of hoops to get back. You serve the timeout and done.

Lockout is just Purgatory/Limbo with no guarantee of return. And there are way too many in there now instead of the DH. But both sides would need to put things behind them.

It sure would be fantastic to see some friends get pre-Christmas pardons! Come on Bill, what do you say? :)

It's not that big a deal. Right. It's Management deciding to punish remarks you disagree with. Oh wait. You don't believe in censorship…
I suppose my lingering resentment of the lockout you did to me for lashing out at you for running all those "Should the OFM?" polls many years ago brands me a snowflake too.
Your uneven use of your DH and locking policies show your own prejudices and inability to take criticism well.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian22 Dec 2017 6:56 a.m. PST

Well, I for one prefer the Dawghouse!

The problem is that we get people who repeatedly go to the Dawghouse and never change their behavior. So it is better sometimes to add "the human touch" and have Editor Gwen talk to them.

Basically, she tells me she gets two kinds of responses: either the person understands what they did wrong and promises to change whatever it was about their forum behavior that was a problem; or they send her a "flame" that shows they're never going to change, and then we can permanently lock them out which is best for everyone involved.

Right. It's Management deciding to punish remarks you disagree with. Oh wait. You don't believe in censorship…

Big difference there, John. TMP is a business. No business is going to let people in who repeatedly criticize, complain, whine, etc. People get warnings, but if they won't correct the behavior, they have to go.

I suppose my lingering resentment of the lockout you did to me for lashing out at you for running all those "Should the OFM?" polls many years ago brands me a snowflake too.

I just think it's fruitless to nurse a grudge. All is does is make you unhappy. Move on, suck it up, be a grown-up, forget about it, forgive others if you expect to be forgiven yourself someday.

Winston Smith22 Dec 2017 7:59 a.m. PST

Let me see if I have this correct. YOU can nurse all the grudges you want, but the hoi polloi are not.

Cacique Caribe22 Dec 2017 8:24 a.m. PST

So, Bill, how about that TMP Pardon Day?

A dozen or two people, all issues forgotten by both parties, and just in time for Xmas?

Dan

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian22 Dec 2017 8:42 a.m. PST

Bill, how about that TMP Pardon Day?

Most of them* can come back any time they want to. They just have to promise to obey forum rules.

* there are a few that have already had too many 'second chances'

I don't have a grudge against the guy, I just think he's a time waster because he doesn't know what he's talking about. Keeps giving me advice for the wrong type of database. You would think that if he was such an expert, he'd realize his mistake… grin

I feel just like the goalie in Slap Shot explaining to the color announcer about going into the penalty box, I feel shame, sit and sulk a week, relize I did wrong then get out and continue playing.
