Actually, I understand that in Shia Islam, the decisionmakers have decided that sex reassignment surgery is the 'cure' for being gay. In Iran, if you're a man and gay, it's 'go to jail, or go to hospital'. Even if you don't want to be a woman. So wouldn't be surprised to see something similar in Iraq soon. |

Duck Now you have me shuddering too. We already know how brutal and crude female genital mutilation procedures can be among many of their brethren. Some of them look like they were performed by blind men with absolutely no knowledge about female anatomy or the purpose of monthly cycles, and using old razors or worse, with no concern about the immediate and long term suffering the victim will suffer for decades. Apart from Jeff Davison, cross dressing was not unknown during the ACW.
Many female Confederate spies would don breeches to sneak through enemy lines. However, less worthy, are the many men who dressed as women to avoid conscription. There's an amusing photo of Union general Lyon who donned women's clothes to spy on his rebel adversaries:

of women dressing as men and serving in the ranks ! There are accounts of Colonials escaping from the British in women's garb during the AWI as well. Cross dressing for various purposes is by no means new though the OP seems to think it novel.
The photos provided, *if* genuine, only show those who were ham fisted. I'm sure it was a ruse used by several to escape.
