So I've painted the French 9th Light and 84th Line infantry and I'm looking for flags with the inscription Incomparables and one against ten on them. Nap flags havent included these inscriptions. Am I right in thinking they would be on the usual flag for 1808/1815 ? I assume on the 'left' side so under the campaign list ie ULM, WAGRAM, UN CONTRE DIX, is that right ?

I'll see if I can photoshop them if thats the right place

As far as I am aware, the 84th had a small brass plaque attached just under the Eagle with the appropriate inscription upon it. I have seen a number of images of the 9th Light's Eagle and there is no 'Incomparable' on it.

The regulations for the flag attached to the Eagle were very specific and there was no flexibility for 'extra words' whether the 1804, 1812 or 1815 versions. In short, when you are modelling there is nothing for the 9th and a plaque for the 84th.

9e légère wouldn't carry their eagle on campaign after 1807 – after they lost one in 1807 at Mohrungen, there is a good debate as if on this colour the special Incomparable flag design, which was abolished when the egles were introduced was inofficially carried or not.

The Flag Dude could probably make you the flags with an inscription anyway if you really wanted it…. Gamers license.

Please provide evidence for this idea.

i have a small piece of metal painted brass on the base of my eagle for the 84e de ligne, no tekst as it is to small for that, but it does look a bit digg-fferent than the other eagles in my armies, 9th no idea (but as pbishop12 says gamers licence so you can have it added on the flag if you wish.

After 1807 the Emperor introduced regulations which required all Leger regiments to leave their Eagles in depot on campaign and for the Ligne regiments only to carry the Eagle of the 1st battalion. Of course, Napoleon's army being what it was, many colonels, both line and light, ignored these rules.

In 1812 it became even more moot as only one Eagle was issued to each regiment.

Ok thanks, brass plaque under the eagle of the first battalions, 9e carried their eagle at Waterloo, it says so in MY head, which is what counts :-) Thats easier than changing the flag too.

Possibly from this Kevin

Sounds like they lost a flag, a special one to the Russians. But not an eagle, it was broken and not fixed to the flag pole.

thanks for that. This suggests the motto was on the flag, but only in 1802, with the 1804 eagle not bearing it.

This might be of interest.

Prior to the Christmas period I read the book by T E Crowdy: Incomparable – Napoleons 9th Light Infantry Regiment and can recommend it to anyone interested in the 9th. It is full of detail and interesting facts about the regiment. I cannot remember it mentioning the addition of the word incomparable being placed on the flag after the battle of Marengo where their actions attracted the "incomparable" tag.
