Hi QC. The number of antennae on a vehicle depends on the number of radio sets mounted. For instance the CO's vehicle would have one for the brigade net, one for the regimental net, and probably HQ Squadron and Command Troop nets too. He would need to be able to speak directly to the Brigade Commander as well as with all his subordinates. Whereas a troop leader's vehicle would only have squadron and troop nets. Being a lowly subaltern he would only need to speak to his squadron leader, and the other tanks in his own troop.

As for the colour, antennae are issued as a part of the radio kit so would remain whatever colour they were painted in the factory – usually green or khaki. They were made of copper tubing and were easily damaged so would be removed whenever practical, especially when out of the line or if the vehicle was undergoing maintenance. The antenna bases on the other hand, being fixed to the vehicle, would get repainted every time the vehicle got a fresh coat.

I hope that makes sense!

Windy
