I'm making a division of french for Waterloo, but not following any OOB. I've got 2 brigades of french ( 4 infantry battalions and some guns each) done. So far my 3rd brigade has 2 battalions of old guard. I want to add 2 more battalions, but I don't really want 1/3 of my army to be elite old guard. Were there any regular battalions that fought with the guard, that would make sense to add to this brigade? At a push I could do young guard and just not make them elite?(can young guard be made from the current plastics? Filing cuffs is within my limited skill set) |

For Waterloo you had the Old Guard and the Young Guard and that was it. There was no Middle Guard in 1815. This leaves only line and light. You could, perhaps, go for Swiss. They were at Wavre rather than Waterloo, but fought exceptionally well by all accounts, so they maybe deserve a bonus under whatever rules you are using. link They followed French organisation (six companies of which two were elite), and wore French equipment and uniforms, except that their coats were red with (in my sources) blue facings. There had previously been more Swiss units in Napoleon's army with other facing colours than blue. Other sources suggest that they wore a mixture of those previous facing colours: mid-blue, dark blue, black, yellow. But this would give you a French unit in red coats, which isn't a thing you see every day. It's not the British orangey "old brickwork" red, it's more a sort of Ferrari blood red. As I say they weren't at Waterloo itself but they were in the campaign, saw action and were well thought of. You'd then have a reserve brigade of your best units, but they're not so farcically powerful that they will win any battle for you just by advancing. I am not sure what plastics you're working with so can't advise re Young Guard availability. |

You don't make it clear what your existing infantry battalions are – if all line then a couple of light battalions would ring the changes, likewise a swiss battalion in red. |

Young Guard would brigade nicely Uniform wise they are pretty similar, or use Perry in greatcoats and they work just fine |

Here I was thinking a little bit of rouge and some eye liner. |

Ok thanks for the ideas. Exiting brigades are 3 line 1 light each. mostly in great coats (perry and warlord) and 1 victrix 1807-1812 for variety the light battalions are victrix with the cuffs filed off. I thought about doing Swiss, but plastic Bardin's are hard to come by, so it would be victrix 1807 uniforms again. Are young guard just regular infantry, same shako, but with epulettes on everyone and light infantry cuffs ? Do they have a sword ? (And isn't that the same as victrix middle guard given the shako is covered?) |

I made my 3rd and 4th Regiments of Grenadiers and Chasseurs of the Imperial Guard in mixed uniforms, some with bearskins, some with shakos and some with bicornes. I would rate them as less than the real Old Guard 1st and 2nd Regiments. You can see one of their battalions here (you need to scroll down to nearly the end of the article). link Rod |

Two battalions of Old Guard retook Plancenoit on the French right flank when the Young Guard was thrown out by the Prussians. The Young Guard joined the defense of Plancenoit with the two Old Guard battalions and fought with them, so that might be an idea for your project. |

Inspired by the comments here I've done some more reading on young guard and I think that's the way to go. Esp. If they both fought plancenoit. I think a sprue of middle guard and a sprue of infantry from eBay should let me model that a battalion. Thanks. |
