Have any of you ever sat down to write a set of rules for a certain time period only to find that when the mechanics are part way done you feel that they are better suited for a completely different time period? This just happened to me as I had a set of combat mechanics that I really like and I wrote them for ancients/medieval but I think that they are possibly better suited for early horse and musket (ECW, etc…). I'm sure this was also influenced by what I am currently painting, but it is a weird situation.

we did change horses but not like that. We were well on the way to Writing Maneouver group using a range of Die. We were persuaded to go to D20 by my son an avid RPG. It was a bit of an act of faith at the time but it proved to be a great move, simplified game play and got the granularity we needed.

I have played other people's rules where mid-play I've thought that the mechanisms would be great for another period.

If you write rules, it will happen to you at some point or another.

Roll a d6:

1 – Your horse bucks when you try to get off and you both drown.
2 – You get your foot caught in the stirrup, drown and your corpse get dragged out by your horse.
3 – Trying to change midstream spooks your current horse. You both drown.
4 – The horses collide due to the Venturi effect. You are crushed to death.
5 – The second horse spooks when you grab it. You and it drown
6 – You get tangled in both sets of equipage. You and both horses drown.

But, yes … I have a jar of notepaper with mechanics I abandoned in one genre that would work well for another. Occasionally, I empty the jar out and look for inspiration.

Yes I have dozens of concept rules in varying states of completion.
Sometimes the play testing does not work out. The mechanics may be too slow or even too fast or general.
A few times a concept like using blocks is your first choice, yet using plastic pieces work out better.
Sadly I have never discarded the concepts and still have them on thumb drive. Lol

UshCha – If you ever feel the need for a finer degree of granularity, I have an old pair of 30-sided dice I will let you have.
