I'm reading Ian Castle's Austerlitz book and have been checking out uniforms of some of the units whose actions are described.

The usually reliable Napolun website says the Sumy Hussars had grey pelisse and saddle cloth. TWC's 'Roll Up That Map' also says grey (well it looks grey).

Viskovatov,a new source for non-Russian speakers, says turquoise. He was writing about 40 years after the wars.

Does anyone know who has this right? I am wondering if these are in fact the same colour, in the same way that there is a WW2 Luftwaffe grey which has a pronounced violet/mauve tinge. Except grey =/= turquoise.

I am nowhere near collecting any Russians but I do have 1805 Austrians so I want to be sure I don't pick an Austrian hussar regiment that will look too similar to any later Russian unit I might acquire.

Soum Hussars changed their turquoise to grey in 1809.

Viskavotov has 11 November 1809 – In the Sumy Regiment— grey pelisse and dolman; red pants (chakchiry) and collar and cuffs on the dolman; white braid, galloon, and buttons; red sabretache with white trim and monogram; grey saddlecloth, with red trim and monogram – see right hand figure at link (the other two are Pavlograd Regiment (left figure) and Aleksandriya Regiment (centre figure))

The link I gave is very good for painting up Russian armies, it has charts broken up for different years. There is a chart for 1809 for Hussars

I just found after years of looking on that link a list of what batteries by number where in which brigades. There is a lot of info there.
