"WAL Snowden, the last of a little-known group of intrepid World War II soldiers who evaded the rampant Japanese Army and earned the nickname ''Malayan Harriers'', has died in hospital in Geelong, aged 89. Sadly, the heroics of the group have never been officially recognised. Indeed, such was the suspicion about their deeds in some quarters that all they wanted was to be cleared of the unwarranted stigma of being deserters.
