Divisions within the mutineers doomed the uprising as much as their atrocities. THe Atrocities (Cawnpore as well as the isolated outposts) gave the British troops a white hot fury and knowledge that the consequence of defeat was death.

I think they had legitimate grievances but lost their morale high ground through the behavior towards non-combatants
