I have a multi-media kit of the Hunley and would like some advice on painting it. The instructions say to paint it all dark gray. Could I properly rust the below waterline area of the hull? What about the spar torpedo and the spar it is attached to. Any help will be greatly appreciated. |

I'd say this is a good guide. Looks to be dark metallic gray with a wooden spar. |

Based on newer research from the recovered vessel, it is now believed that the torpedo was on the bottom of the hull. The wooden piece on top was to stabilize it. You can see some good pictures here: hunley.org/history-is-made Good luck with your project!

Thanks for the help fellows. Looks like the dark gray wins. |

Dark bluish gray works too. Dan PS. I like this Mort Kunstler painting, called "Final Mission":
