According to my glossy La Guardia en su Historia, they were formed in the early 1730s for Felipe V's campaigns on the French side (Spanish took Naples in 1734). They were the elite companies, grouped together as stated (4 squadrons), but then officially became Guard in 1742.There was a 5th new squadron (150 men) – the Granaderos Reales (150) formed from dragoon elite companies, dressed like th Guardias du Corps (sic) and brigaded with the Carabineros (but these didn't survive the peace.) |
