I have the TSTAF/20 rules as well as the North Africa, Boxer and Sikh Wars expansions. I noticed that apparently the Morale rules morphed at sometime in the past. Some of the rules use a D20 for morale while others are D6 based. Is there a general retrofit for the D6 to D20 transition or do people just dance with the one who brung 'em and use whatever the rule set being played states? This came to my attention when looking at the recently discussed unit data cards and noticing that those posted use a different dice convention from my French Foreign Legion rules. Thanks in advance for any info. |

Joe, as far as I can recall, morale has always used d6. The only place d20 are used is for firing. |

some morale tests are with 1D6 and others are 2D6, but NONE use D20. I posted the cards and there is no suggestion I can see that D20 is needed for morale. That said, I do not know what dice are used in the supplements. |

Yes the D20 morale appear in the supplements for North Africa and the Sikh Wars. One of the authors refered to using "the" D20 tables which is what prompted me to think there may have been something semi official. |

It makes no sense that they would change the system in such a drastic fashion. Maybe Lori will chime in and set the record straight. |

In the 20th Edition of TSATF, all morale rolls are with D6 -- major and critical with 2 x D6 and all others (rally, charge completion, and stand and fight with 1 x D6). Movement and melee combat are with D6 but firing is with D20. Jim |

I've seen some morale rules in supplements and scenario books that use D20 morale. In fact, I believe that 800 Fighting Englishmen, as "official" as a supplement can get, uses D20 morale. I intend to go with D20 for Flames of Liberty. Let's not make the mistake of equating TSATF with a rigid tournament game like DBA or Flames of War. The rules are mutable after all. "Whatever works!" |

Hi Waco Joe, some of the older variants use D20 morale. The 20th Anniversary edition (soon to be the 40th Anniversary) uses D6 morale. Cheers, JB |

In my gaming club, we use a D20 for morale because it is easier to have one set of dice and it is easier to have modifiers on a d20 (a +1 is huge with d6) What we did is we calculated the probability with 2 D6 and use the d20 numbers that matches those probability. I can provide the conversion charts and troop charts on demand. Send me an email at sylvainncATyahooDOTcom Regards Sylvain |

The supplements were not written by Larry Brom but by other people. Some of them have chosen to use D-20 for everything but movement. The basic rules use 2 D-6 for morale. |

Nick This is correct. I use d20 for everything but movement for simple reasons: it is easier to distinguish with a d20. A +1 with a d6 becomes a +3 for a d20 but I can distinguish units with a +2 or a +4 For example, for combat I give a +3 for NWF British but a +4 for Gurkhas to take in account their knives. For morale, a 2-10 becomes a 1-17. But i can give a 1-16 for A unit that I believe is not as good but does not deserve to go to 2-9 Like Larry was saying, modify what you want Sylvain |
