Hi all,
My fellow co-blogger 'Mr Steve' has put together a review of John F White's revised book about arguably one of the great Roman Emperors, Commander and philosopher, Aurelian.

The Emperor nicknamed "manu ad ferum", loosely translated "hand on hilt", wasn't much of a philosopher. I think there may be some confusion with Emperor Marcus Aurelius the Stoic philosopher. I haven't seriously considered this book because it's a Pen & Sword publication but, I'll give the review a read.
"Aurelian and the Third Century." by the cooly named Alaric Watson is a good book on Aurelian.

I agree , I didn't get any impression that Aurelian was considered much of a philosopher when I read the book. I will have a word with the sub-editor.

No philosophising at all as far as I remember, but then I suppose I could bluff it and quote some rediculously obscure reference that is now held in the Kremlin and not available to public scrutiny – but I won't.

Several years ago I read a book which included his meditations, basically his thoughts. He followed stoicism.

wrgmr1, are you sure it was "Aurelian" and not "Marcus Aurelius"?…..Aurelius was a stoic and left what we call the "Meditations".

Ah yes Dave, you are correct. I have it wrong. Cheers, Thomas

I read the book and agree with book review. It is a good book on a mostly unknown (just look at the confusion in this strand between Marcus Aurelius and Aurelian) emperor who deserves more recognition. Just my two bits.

GOOD READ about a obscure Roman.
