"Una vez declarada la guerra la "Guerra Gran ", como fue llamada por el pueblo,todo el mundo rivalizaba en ayudas y participaciónes directas, sin regatear esfuerzos y con una decisión que contrastaba con la pasividad del gobierno de Carlos IV, que si iba a la guerra era forzado por las circunstancias.
El general Antonio Ricardos era el comandante del ejercito español y capitan general de Catalnya, inicio el enfrentamiento entrando en el Rossellón ,el 17 de abril de 1793, respondiendo a la llamada de la villa fronteriza de Sant Llorens de Cerdans que pedía ayuda para liberarse de las iras de los revolucionarios . Ricardos ocupó todo el Vallespir y la mayor parte del Conflent : la suerte acompaño a los españoles , y para el mes de agosto de 1793 casi todo el Rosellón estaba en su poder, a excepción de la ciudad de Perpinyá…"
