I have just finished modelling the two Highland Regiments of the British Army during the Jacobite Rebellion. These were the 43rd Foot (Black Watch) and 64th Foot (Loudoun's). You can read about them here:

My standard system for painting a Black Watch tartan is to start with blue, add a dark green overstripe, then a thin black topstripe down the centre of the green overstripes.

Rod, I'm going to have to try that technique for the Black Watch tartan.

Here's a web site that includes painting techniques for most of the tartans there were worn by highland regiments in the British Army. Don't mind the "Toy Soldier" in the title.
