Paths of Glory

My wife is a horse lover and demanded I take her to Warhorse on opening night. After we saw it, as someone who focused On World War One history in college I found it to be pretty mediocre but didn't let on to my wife. I asked her with a straight face what she thought and she told me it was the dumbest, most unbelievable thing she ever saw. Apparently for horse lovers it's not the treatment of the horses that was so upsetting, it was the fact that anyone who knows anything about horses would know that horses don't act like they do in the movie or that anything they do is very believable. I was surprised as she was really looking forward to it, but judged it to be a total waste of her time and apologized for suggesting it. I didn't mind, a night at the movies with the wife was worth it, even if neither of us thought much of it. Maybe the play was better?

The Blue Max: saw it at the local theatre when it came out in 1966. I was 8 years old. It inspired me to buy every WW1 Airfix 1/72 airplane I could find.
Funny I've been building them once again!

Is Midnight Clear any good? There is also a French version called Joyeux Noel. My wife and I were thinking to show one or both to our kids.

I haven't seen most of the films mentioned, but will add another vote for Lawrence of Arabia. A superb film.

I would watch all the films mentioned again, there are so few about this war.
other good ones are

"West front 1918" -- Love that tank in the attack at the end.
" The long engagement"
"Wooden Crosses." Sort of a French "all quiet…"

"A farewell to arms," various versions not great but gives the Italian view.
"Revolt of the zombies " 1936. How zombies won the war
"Passchendaele"
"Birdsong"

I have not seen it but it's on my netflicks waiting list
"Captain Conan"

Not so much warfare but set during the Great War.
" grand illusion"

Worth watching for just a gas attack with horses in the masks
"Frauline Doktor"

It's a bit boring but good acting and gives a smaller desert perspective to "LoA"
"The lost patrol"

For Africa on the Westside, don't forget

"black and white in color"

Lawrence of Arabia, narrowly edging out Paths of Glory.

They basically made the horses into dogs.
They always do that if you want an animal to connect to the audience.
Make it behave and act like a dog.

A few votes for The Lighthorsemen. On the same battle, as well as battles of Romani and Gaza, don't forget Forty Thousand Horsemen (1940). Some of the scenes actually used contemporary Light Horse from the Australian Army.

The film was directed by Charles Chauvel. Charles Chauvel was the nephew of Sir Harry Chauvel who commanded the Desert Mounted Corps in the Palestine campaign.

This is a good film focusing on an ignored part of the war – well worth watching

Oh! What a Lovely War…

For a (more) serious film, though, my choice would be Paths of Glory.
