Not sure that I'm completely convinced, but this Quora answer makes some interesting observations on China's secretive stealth fighter: link

Hmm, a historian and avid military watcher who thinks that Chinese avionics are far superior to the US and states no other nation makes better engines than the US. Hmmm. No known flight experience or understanding, but he did live in Hong Kong.

While Chinese engines are notoriously bad, I think the UK would beg to differ with his engine assessment. I guess Rolls Royce should just hang it up.

The J20 isn't junk, and the Chinese military is getting better and better at fielding arms, but this guy an authority is not.

Uh, what the article says is "Chinese avionics are better than American ones in some respects and worse in others. The only area in which American designs are indisputably superior are the engines. However it is also true that American military engines lead the world by a wide margin and no other country comes close."

American military aero engines have lifespans 10x greater than Russian ones, and pushing 100x greater than Chinese engines. Not sure where the Europeans fall in here, but most European jets are using American engines these days, not Rolls!

Rolls was a co-developer of most modern US engines. They also make the Eurojet engines that power the Typhoon, the Pegasus that powers the US Harrier, and most civilian jet engines for jumbo jets. US engines are amazingly good, but Rolls was a part of the engineering of most modern US engines.

The French make some nice engines as well.
