I've been replacing some of my Plastic Soldier Company 20mm Russians and Germans with AB figures. Partly to add variety, but mainly because the AB figures just look so good. Here are some of the Russian leader pack. I had painted these with their faces in my usual style, which is a base coat of flesh followed by GW's Ogryn Flesh (or whatever the new name for it is now), but I thought my faces were not standing out enough and so tried a different style. A base coat of dark brown and then the flesh blocked in, followed by a lighter flesh highlight. The contrast works well for gaming and the figures look much better from a distance. Here's one of the Russian leaders with the face done in my earlier style:
And here are the leaders with the new style faces:
I've also added two new squads to my basic German Heer infantry platoon, all figures from AB again:

They look great! Really nice work. I am painting a Heer force from AB right now as well. Wanna share how you were able to get shoulder badges and collar markings so nicely done? I am struggling with that right now. Thanks for sharing. |

Thank you, glad you like them. I wish I could give you a magical tip for those badges and collar markings, but I'm afraid it's nothing other than a fine paintbrush and a steady hand…. plus a few years of practice. I use Winsor & Newton Series 7 sable brushes, they are expensive, but they are expensive for a reason. I find the No0 brush handles most jobs in 20mm. I magnify the figures by x2.5 using off-the-shelf reading glasses from the local chemist. The paint is Vallejo and I keep it fairly diluted, if it's too thick it won't flow and you want a smooth flow for this sort of fine work, as you need to try to paint each line once and in one single brushstroke if at all possible. Other than that it's just practice and a willingness to go back and correct mistakes if you have to. |

Great work TP1! I use the same method of painting faces. |
