I have just unearthed my Zulu War forces which haven't seen light of day since I joined the military in 1994. All 15mm figs, they have 3 and 4 figs per base.

Just wondering what rules are out there for me to get back into the genre and perhaps take a few of the club lads with me?

TMWWBK seems an obvious starting point (and I really enjoy Dan Mersey's her rules sets) but having been away for so long I'm not sure what the other options are.

thanks in advance
Paul

I've used TMWWBK in AZW games with great results. I'm also partial to The Sword and the Flame but I've never played it with multiple figure bases. However, I'm sure it could be done.

Black Powder with supplement

Battles for Empire (PDF file through Holtz Mats) or TSATF/800FE are the rules I use – Nice Black Powder supplement

I use BforE for larger battles – though looking at 800 Fighting Englishmen as well

I use The Sword and the Flame for smaller actions

I would recommend Black Powder Rules and the Zulu Black Powder Supplement. Hope it helps.

As always, comments are appreciated.

Take care

Hi i use Black Powder enjoyably (without supplement) for large actions. I have used TMWWBK for large scale skirmish (Intombi River). I like that BP focuses on a unit/armies morale state (e.g. disordered, shaken) as opposed to casualties as for colonial forces under pressure might have relatively light casualties but not be in position to hold or follow commands as ordered. Hope you have fun whichever rules you use. Oh and check out archive.org for a wealth of contemporary campaign accounts full of inspiration for scenarios.

We use Indiana's, Colonels and Emirs which was for 15mm mass colonial combat. The scale is 1:10 for Europeans 12 men per company and 1:15/20 for native troops with most units being 24 men. It was released in 1984 and was nominated for the HG Wells award for best miniature rules. We lost to TSATF which was expected.
