link You have to feel for the families of the crew. But its a modern (ish) boat? |

Looks like they are still following the 'misplaced' rather than 'lost' theme. A pretty inhospitable place if you have to abandon ship due to a fire. |

Argentine has (had?) a submarine ??? 🤔 Regards Russ Dunaway |
22ndFoot | 17 Nov 2017 3:03 p.m. PST |
Russ, They've at least two – one was to replace the Santa Fe which the Royal Marines put out of action on South Georgia in 1982 with a Carl Gustav:
Good luck to the lads on San Juan. |
David Manley | 17 Nov 2017 3:07 p.m. PST |
Confusing your Argentinean losses there 22nd. The RMs took out a frigate in South Georgia with a Carl Gustav and lots of 7.62, the Santa Fe was crippled by a depth charge from a Wessex 3 and an SS12 from a Wasp |
Cacique Caribe | 17 Nov 2017 4:30 p.m. PST |
Wow. Poor guys. What a way to go. Even if some got out, those waters are brutal, even now in Summer, so the sooner they're picked up the better. I feel for the families and loved ones. Not knowing is a horrible feeling. Dan |
Lion in the Stars | 17 Nov 2017 6:06 p.m. PST |
Oh, damn. I really hope that it's only a loss of comms. (The USN has had similar cases where the boat had a different check-in schedule than the squadron had written down, so about two days after the sub was declared missing the sub popped up and returned to port) That's bad water to be having trouble! |
vicmagpa1 | 18 Nov 2017 4:39 a.m. PST |
no matter what you think of the country. I hope they are safe. |

Lord God, our power evermore Whose arm doth reach the ocean floor Dive with our men beneath the sea Traverse the depths protectively O hear us when we pray, and keep them safe from peril in the deep. Still hoping that this is just a really badly broken radio, but it's not looking good. I'm afraid that I will need to get an Argentine flag to fly at half-mast with my US flag and USN flag. I don't want to bury any family this holiday season… And yes, anyone who goes to sea on a sub is part of my family. Regardless of what flag they salute. |
Cacique Caribe | 19 Nov 2017 12:33 a.m. PST |
Wow Lion, those are some very noble and powerful words and sentiments. Dan |
Lion in the Stars | 19 Nov 2017 4:21 p.m. PST |
Well, I won't claim the poetry, that's a verse of the Navy Hymn. But yeah. I don't care what flag you salute, the sea will kill us all equally. Therefore all submariners are my family. But we might have some good-ish news, there were some satphone calls to several different navy bases that got cut off too quick to get a position (bad storms down there right now, and satphones can't punch through thunderstorms very well). So the sub is on the surface. Or at least WAS on the surface when they tried to call home. (With bad weather, a sub will usually try to go deep and ride it out) |

Dear God, be good to me; The sea is so wide, And my boat is so small. Breton fisherman poem. And in those seas, ANY ship is "so small"…. Read the USN is sending a P-8A down to help in the search. Hope they turn up ok. The sea can be as merciless as it is beautiful… |
Charlie 12 | 23 Nov 2017 1:41 p.m. PST |
Well, its really not looking good. Following is from the Argentine's: "Captain Enrique Balbi, a navy spokesman, said an "abnormal, singular, short, violent, non-nuclear event" had been detected in the South Atlantic ocean on the morning of Nov. 15. That was around the same time the ARA San Juan sent out its last signal, reported Reuters." Hope for the best, but more likely, the worst… |

Hey, does anyone make a model of the ARA San Juan? 1/700 scale would be fine, 1/350 would be better. I feel a need to make a small memorial. |
Andy ONeill | 25 Nov 2017 10:02 a.m. PST |
Britain's Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has offered "sincerest condolences" to Argentina, saying: "When it comes to situations like this, nationality doesn't matter: All sailors have an obligation to help each other in a time of such desperate need." Not much chance for them now. Maybe at least this non nuclear violent event thing means they didn't suffer. There's at least one kit, Lion. link To my mind. It's the thought that counts. Be that prayer wishes or whatever. My sympathies are for the families now. |

Lion, OKB Grigorov makes or made models of the TR1700 class in both 1/350 and 1/700 scales. It looks like they are out of stock, but you may able to track one down. Man, I was hoping for a happy resolution to this one. Damn. I'm no submariner – too averse to water – but I know how tight-knit folks are in hazardous lines of work. We're similar in mining. |
Lion in the Stars | 25 Nov 2017 9:38 p.m. PST |
I was really hoping this was a busted radio room, and that the San Juan would pull into port OK after breaking out the little handheld bridge-to-bridge radios. Now to go find 44 sets of US dolphins to send to the families. |
Cacique Caribe | 27 Nov 2017 7:57 a.m. PST |

Lion in the Stars | 27 Nov 2017 3:20 p.m. PST |
Yeah. I really hope that the kaboom heard earlier meant no suffering. Sitting in the dark waiting for your air to run out has to be the worst way to go. |
Charlie 12 | 01 Dec 2017 7:31 p.m. PST |
Its official (as if we didn't already know): Its no longer a rescue op. Its now a recovery op. I just hope it was quick… |

You are not going to beleived this… some very XXXX people here are saying that our Submarine has been sunk by a British Submarine… My gosh!. Stupidy of that kind in this moment…

Some very silly people still think the earth is flat. Despite the fact you can go to a beach and look at that curved horizon. They presumably never thought about the sun or moon or mars and there's some weird conspiracy maintaining the illusion of a round earth. Extending to the scientist who bounces a laser off the prisms placed on the moon (by US astronauts). Every day. A flat earth is pretty much as likely as a British attack on an Argentinian submarine. |

This stuff makes me cringe. My brother was a nuclear squid on various boats. Spent 20 years, off and on, nuke boats and months at a time on patrol. I really feel for the families especially losing loved ones at this time of the year. |
Lion in the Stars | 02 Dec 2017 11:59 p.m. PST |
Doesn't surprise me, Armand. But you can ask them why the Brits sent search planes, and why the Minister of Defense himself extended condolences. |
Martin From Canada | 19 Nov 2018 7:15 p.m. PST |
The Argentinians are claiming that they found it. Unfortunately, it's on the sea bead in multiple pieces. link
