"This chapter provides a general narrative overview of the revolutionary and Napoleonic periods (c.1785–1815) from the perspective of the Netherlands, France and Britain. It examines the diplomatic and military relations of the three powers in their wider context, outlining key moments of alliance, war, peace and revolution. The chapter also gives an overview of the internal affairs of the Netherlands, summarising the historiographical debate around the Patriot Revolution of the 1780s, and tracing the Dutch state's evolution from the United Provinces to the Batavian Republic, Kingdom of Holland, departments of Napoleon's Empire, and finally the United Kingdom of the Netherlands."
