I may have found my birthday present to myself, link I backed the foam cutter version earlier this year and have played around with that. This seems to be a lot more user friendly, assuming you have a 3d printer. 75mm/3 inch hexes in a great variety of formations. 7-8 hours to print 6 hexes looks to be a good overnight project, there does not seem to be much of a risk of the print job "blowing up" in mid printing since the design is so simple, Here's a youtube vid from the creator.
