Night battles were not common in this period for all the obvious reasons of command and control in an era that relied heavily on line of sight. This next scenario play-test proved quite challenging but in the end gave a good little game with plenty of decision points to both sides looking to gain advantage from the chaos of fighting at night.

Excellent battle report! As you say, night actions were not common, but this set of rules (I have them, but haven't had a chance to even read them yet) seem to handle a division a side at night very well, and provide a plausible outcome (love the battalion that marched off in the wrong direction!) Thanks for sharing! |

I know that you have tried to model this engagement several times using different rule sets and have prompted me to try and give it a go myself. I was going to try a variable movement system for the French units. Roll 2d6. 7 – move forward one full move 6/8 – move forward a half move 5 – move one full move veer left 9 – one full move veer right 3/4 – one half move veer left 10/11 – one half move veer right 2 – double move forward 12 – does not move Units that hit each other would have to spend a turn sorting themselves out and adjust to correct facing. I would only apply this to the French units that are still blinds. Once deployed, they would have some situational awareness and could move as ordered. I'll give it a go with C&GII. |
