….and No One Knows Why "A mysterious radioactive cloud that swept through much of Europe this fall has officials baffled. The cloud was harmless and has dissipated, France's Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety wrote in a statement Thursday, but between Sept. 27 and Oct. 13, the radioactive nuclide Ruthenium 106 was detected in "the majority of European countries." Experts aren't totally sure where the substance came from, though testing suggests it was first released during the last week of September in Russia or Kazakhstan, likely somewhere between Russia's Volga River and Ural Mountains…."

Well, that's definitely interesting! Did some radical group in the Urals try to build a dirty bomb with material from a medical facility and it blew up in their face? Dan |

But it says there's nothing to be worried about |

No, typically Ru-106 is discharged as a result reprocessing nuclear fuel. The estimates for the magnitude of the original source really suggest an industrial-scale source. The quantities picked up over Europe are nothing to worry about, your talking thousandths of a Becquerel against worry level in food of 100s of Bq per kilo. Its also not the first time an unidentified radioactive cloud has appeared in recent years. I'd say more worrying than someone try to build a dirty bomb is a country not notifying the IAEA about a significant incident! And no I don't think they are 'up to anything' who ever they are I would lay this firmly at the door of human stupidity – it probably not being admitted to for political reason. I feel really sorry for the people who live near whatever facility it is as they are clearly not being told either! I have my suspicions about the kind of country where this kind of thing would go on… |

Oh, look…. link The notorious Mayak facility is a likely candidate. |

Lion remember Chernobyl. The commies kept that quiet as well. youtu.be/_USpAPkAd5A Obviously a lot due to weather conditions but this shows how it might be happening now as well. |

@Caedite Eos: Yeah, I remembered that, we talked about it in my Power for Society class in college (basically as an example of how NOT to design a reactor in the first place) I also (vaguely) remember the pics from back then, too. If I ever travel around there, I need to make some LARGE offerings of vodka to the firefighters. Hey, Vlad? I don't particularly care about reprocessing fuel, but please have the common courtesy to not make a mess while you're doing it! |
