Not sure were to post this really but does anyone know when the French Army stopped using/issuing the sabre Briquet? |

Officially the French infantry carried a short sword until the 1870s though it is likely that it was often left in stores. The classic design familiar from the Napoleonic Wars was phased out in favour of an open-hilted design during the 1830s. |

The briquet was carried by élites in the Line (discontinued for voltigeurs after 1812), all the lights (discontinued for chasseurs and voltigeur in 1812) and probably retained as long as possible in many units. |

Thanks fellows – have just bought one but was suspicious of the sellers description- am now pretty sure is Spanish 1837 rather than French 1800 as advertised – militaria is a minefield! |
