While the Vietnam War is remembered rightly as a tragedy in both the United States and Vietnam, the same cannot be said for Thailand. There the war is described by participants, military histories and official monuments in largely upbeat terms…

I'll be prepared to bet not one in a hundred of my students or my Thai colleagues could say two things about that war that he hadn't picked up from Hollywood.

The Royal Thai Air Force used the airstrip at Phuoc Vinh on occasion. I remember encountering stocky little guys wearing red baseball caps and Ray-Ban shades which they apparently never took off. They flew C-123Ks (the model with the auxiliary jet engines)and rarely used more than half of the rather short runway whether landing or taking off. We admired their insanity.

.. yes not nearly enough about this is in the common awareness ! ..this had a profound effect on SE Asian politics and security for the ensuing 20-30 years .
