… War was fought not for religious liberty, but between rival groups of persecutors. It still resonates today, and we resist its message at our peril, says the historian and politician….

Of possible interest?

Not "rival groups of persecutors" but rival groups of rich, self interested individuals looking to maintain and advance their own personal fortunes and positions.

That describes just about every war in history

Who ever thought that the ECW was about religious freedom ? What a stupid idea, it was about who wielded the power and how they did it.

Check facts before posting please.

I don't think the OP intended to suggest that the ECW was about religious freedom, simply to link to an article that set up religious freedom as a strawman which could then be destroyed to present the argument that it may have been about who had the freedom to persecute.

As Sandinista says, war is always about grabbing power (and making the other guy pay for the grab). As religion (one's own to the exclusion of others) was a major popular theme at the time and was used by both the fervent and the cynical to advance the cause, I think the article has some merit.

Of course it could have been about hair length. 😄

Perhaps you should too. The OP didn't make the comment that you found stupid. Other than that I am in agreement.
