So I wanted to try out my new fast play rules with my 54s. I've used these to good effect with my 1/6th outdoor games. It's The Sword, The Flame, Machineguns and Grenades with my own stats for modern weapons.

The last time I played with my 54s was in January using Firefight Normandy rules which were draining at squad level. One turn took 2 hours.

Anyway the fast play rules don't really go well with my 54s, feels wrong. Was an unsatisfying game. But every rule set I've tried feels wrong. I don't know, 54 Cold War has been a project of mine for 5 years and I originally planned to have a full heliborne Marine company in 54mm but I don't have enough space on my floor and my scenery kind of sucks and my modelling skill sucks and my rules rewrites suck and my photography skills suck but I never give up. No matter how much I hate this stupid hobby.

Report:

The outskirts of Castro's compound, on the outskirts of Havana. Marines make contact with dug in Cubans. They call in arclight just before the assault which kills, wounds or suppresses more than half of the Cuban platoon. From there the Marines heavy weapons clean up more Cubans, Marines move in with accurate rifle and SAW fire, throwing hand grenades and make short work of the survivors. One Marine got pinned by Cuban AK fire once. All Cubans were killed except one guy that routed off the table. Probably a realistic outcome if you consider the outcome of Marine infantry fights against dug in infantry at various bridges
in Iraq in 2003. The game lasted 3 turns and less than an hour.

The figures and jeep aren't that bad. I think however I might know what the biggest problem here is…

"No matter how much I hate this stupid hobby."

That might be a major indicator of your problems right there….

Be patient, make improvements one at a time, don't let it stress you. For example, replacing the white groundcloth with a brown or green one would be a simple improvement.

Some of the terrain pieces look really good. If you painted the red areas brown before adding flock, the others would look good, too. A darker ground cloth -- beige or tan or light brown -- would look better, too.

Thanks homies for your posts.

Yeah I get frustrated because I rush everything and I don't have time, space or money to do what I want to do.

The ground sheet is actually light green, the closest to green I could find.

I think 54mm was a mistake since I live in a tiny apartment and that doesn't look like changing ever.

I've been thinking seriously about rebuilding everything in 20mm. At least then I could get the Marine transport helicopters I've been wanting.

But I've put years and dollars into these guys and I love them.

Also I need rules that don't seem to suck. I'm not good at modifrying them and I tried 4rce on 4rce and it sucked imo, too abstract and I think I want to try Chain of Command by the two fat ladies (RIP).

I just want a set of rules that I can play straight out of the box and no tedious rewritting and twerking.

Okay so I did some test figures on the weekend, messed around with soft plastics and customising the poses I like. That loctite stuff seems to work good. Valejo flexible primer and matt varnish will hopefully hold the paint on? Anyway feeling good coz it now seems possible to do what I want (Marine heliborne company and eventually a beach assault company) in the way I want them to look. And the helos I want are actually available in 1/72..coool

This Forper 200o posting btw, I had a lot of trouble with my password in a different browser so signed up for this new account.

Well I was going to go all plastics for my Marines but couldn't find good support weapons or vehicle crews in plastic. So ordered some from Elhiem. They turned up last week and I was so impressed I decided to make my whole project metal Elhiem (sides the skinny plastic dudes didn't really fit in with the squat Elhiems) and sent off another big order for a full platoon of Marine infantry and a Soviet Airborne platoon with support. Meanwhile I'm getting to work on converting the Elhiems I have. I love these dudes:

My conversions still need some clean up before paint but good use of 20 hours of my life. Btw it's 2 teams from Weapons Platoon backing up my future rifle platoon, in moving and setup poses for use with No End in Sight rules:
