Just wanted to run this past the experts… I'm planning to paint some 3mm AFVs for France/Belgium 1940. I've never painted 3mm before. I know they will need special treatment to make them stand out. I've read all about 'neon-popping' which I could attempt if the bases were relatively drab. However, in this instance I'll be adding flock to match Hexon which is pretty vibrant. The other alternative is to go very light which brings me to my main question. What I'm planning to do is to undercoat with white gesso and then to use a very weak coloured wash. I will then have to add a little paint, i.e. black under the gun barrels and any additional camo colours. After flocking I will spray varnish everything to fix it but I'm not planning to add a stain as I don't want to darken the AFVs. So, will white gesso plus a coloured wash but no stain work? I want them to be 'light' but not 'flat'. |

It will be okayish. If you want your vehicle to pop out and be well defined you have to use very high contrasts with the vehicle main colors and its most salient parts. |

Contrast is key for making 3mm figures pop. Exagerate the contrasts on the minis and use basing colours that will contrast with the minis. |

Ditto the first two and keep the colors light. A shade or two (at least) lighter then normal for larger figures. |

I just painted them normal (ish) colours and gave them a heavy dry brush in a highlight. Seemed to work OK. |

I highlighted to corners of the body and turret if applicable in a tiny bit of white, that gives a general and faint outline of the vehicle. It makes them stand out well enough. |

I have test painted some Odzzy 3mm modern Soviets. There are pictures on my blog link I just painted them as I would to any other models and they have come out ok, well I think so. |
