Folks,

I am painting and assembling armies to game the Mexican American War in 28mm. Can anybody out there recommend manufacturers for US volunteers? Would appreciate advice on Mississippi and Indiana units. I know OG has Illinois infantry. I think First Corps has Mississippi infantry. But are there other options or substitutions that could work? Will appreciate your expertise on this one.

There was only one Mississippi unit that was involved in actual fighting – the 1st Mississippi Regiment, the "Mississippi Rifles" commanded by Colonel Jefferson Davis, later President of the Confederate States of America. Armed with the Mississippi Rifle, they fought with distinction at Monterrey and Buena Vista in northern Mexico. The regiment was outfitted in red shirts, white duck trousers, and black slouch hats.

This National Guard historical painting of the regiment in action at Buena Vista shows them in light colored slouch hats.

And if you haven't already guessed, I am from Mississippi so have a "soft" spot for this regiment which, by the way, is still in existence as the 155th Infantry Regiment (Mechanized), Mississippi National Guard.

Complete uniform plates of all US Regular and representative Volunteer formations--including Indiana and Mississippi--may be found here: link

28mm Flags of Volunteer units from across the nation, including the 4th Indiana Infantry, 1st and 2nd Mississippi Regiments of Rifles, and 1st Battalion of Mississippi Rifles, are available here: link

A complete list of all Volunteer formations raised for the war, by state, as well as additional uniform information, appears in Appendix The First of "Gone To See The Elephant."

Good Luck!

Patrick, are the uniform and flag links supposed to be the same?
