@Sobieski: There is a word in Japanese that translates to "crossroads killing," tsujigiri. It happened when a samurai would learn a new technique or get a new sword, he'd go find a random civilian or three to kill to test out the technique/blade in live combat. So, yeah, samurai would be in skirmishes almost constantly, even in the 'peaceful' Edo period. |
