Current Poll

One of the (at the time of this writing) current polls, was at my suggestion and reflects my own misunderstanding of how VAT works. While I tried at the time to understand the rules & regulations regarding the tax, I clearly failed in my efforts. I apologize for any misunderstanding(s) caused by my statement. As a means of explanation I have quoted below my response to one of the questions in the poll discussion.
Why, after so many explanations as to how VAT works in the UK, do we STILL get this sort of posting. Well, as the OP, I can say it is because I live in North America where there is little knowledge of how VAT works locally. The information I checked online seemed to indicate that it worked as I described. Also, when I posted the original poll suggestion I was unaware that businesses had a minimum income before they were required to charge VAT. Finally, I would like to add what originally led be to posting the topic was an email conversation with a UK miniatures manufacturer asking if the prices reflected the inclusion of VAT, and if so, would they be deducted from the cost of orders placed to customers outside the EU. As I recall, the response was that running a business in the UK was expensive and while they did not pay VAT on orders sent outside the EU they still charged the same price to customers outside the EU as they did to those inside the EU, effectively pocketing the difference. I ought to say that the the conversation was years ago and my memory may not reflect the actual conversation, as memories are known to be unreliable.

No worries. It's a complicated subject. Taxes have to be complicated otherwise what would all those tax accountants do… |

Don't worry about it. I specialise in international taxation for a living, and knowing one country's tax code is bad enough. For the layman, it's a nightmare. |

Taxes have to be complicated otherwise what would all those tax accountants do… This is my sneaking suspicion why nobody can pass a flat tax. The aliens are propping up the tax accountant industry in corporations and government, and back office controlling individuals and small businesses through pulling the strings on CPA certifications. |

My wife is a CPA and she won't go near tax accounting. She just shudders when she thinks about it. (There are many types of accountants- not all do taxes). |

I think it takes broad shoulders to take responsibility and publicly apologize to the internet in the way you did, even for such a trifling "transgression". Wear your grown-up pants with pride, optional field – Bravo! |
